I need some help.

I am extremely interested in what is going on in the Gaza Strip, unfortunately, I am very ignorant about the geography, political associations and just about every thing else regarding the area.

I listen to the news, and read the paper, and get the feeling that I am supposed to already know all of this.

Maybe I am not tuned to the best of sources. I always try to read all of that fine print that is invisible to all but the most persistent readers of our local paper. All that gets me is a major headache. There is also the fact that most of what national news that is in the paper is a "cut and paste" process from the AP or whatever.

Why can't we have a column written by a couple of local, I don't know, maybe high school teachers regarding national news. Not only would we get an idea of what is being taught in our local schools, but whether the teaching is done with or without political bias.

I had a high school teacher, Mr. Harry Wallace, who made the days in his class worth the effort of going to school. Lively debate, probing questions, and an unending willingness to try to expand our little minds left a definite impression on mine............ As a matter of fact, I called him regarding an essay question on a Political Science final exam at college, many years later. Yes, he answered all of my questions and yeppers....... I was right. (Smug Smile)

Now all of you who know me, know the strange ways in which my mind can deviate from a straight course but, stay with me here. At my advanced age I heard and questioned what was going on in our world. Aha, I thought, check out a map. Hmmm, yep I see it. Next thought was where to get some info that I could trust. Then, I thought, who could point me in the right direction.............And that led me back to a High School "American Political Behavior" teacher. To me, that says a lot. Harry, where are you ??!!!

Ah well, as usual, I digress.......... Always wanted to say that.

I will be digging around the net, asking questions of anyone who may be able to help me, and trying to get all of the basics involved in the Israel situation.

Yes, I located it on the map. I get the gist of where things are happening. That area has been a hot spot for ages. Hhhhhmmmmm Maybe I should check with my Preacher/Teacher John and see if he can offer some insight. Oh yeah, right............. Bible study on Wednesday night....... Be There.

SHUT THE DOOR !!!!

Not really...... The age specification is YA (Young Adult).

The main character of this series is a 16 year old female. The language, at this point, has been appropriate. Sexual scenes have been limited to a grope. The grope was quickly stopped by the virgin female. The male character, age 18, actually apologized. There have been references to having gone "to bed" regarding different characters, but no details... So far, so good.

The subject that I question is Wicca. The main character is discovering this new side of herself. Now, I don't have a problem with anyone's choice of religion, but something about this series bothers me. So far I think that Wicca is presented in the series, I am on book two, in an acceptable light. My problem is that a book or series written about a 16 year old will be read by those probably 12 years old and up.

The "Twilight" series by Stephanie Myers is all the rage with readers of all ages. I enjoyed the series myself. However, "Twilight" is about Vampires. Vampires are mythical creatures. An author may treat Vampires as good, bad, caring, stupid, intelligent, carniverous or just plain crazy.... but, the characters are still make-believe, airy-fairy.

Wicca is a religion seriously practiced by people today as well as yesterday.
I am concerned that a 12 year old who reads these books may or may not percieve Wicca acurately, much less seriously.

I would rather see this series, that I won't name, labeled as Paranormal without the YA attachment. My opinion as a bookstore owner, is that the cover presents itself as something that would attract a young teen reader. There is nothing there that says, "Hey Mom, look what the kiddo is reading".

I put the series down after the finishing the first book. My intention in reading the book was to be able to offer an opinion if asked. I remained troubled throughout the day and picked up the second book to see how the story continued. That incident in itself told me that this book, although written well, may be for an older audience. It piqued my interest and believe me I am older than 12, or 16, or even 32.
